Our history
Zero Waste Education began in 1993 with a simple idea: teach children practical ways to reduce waste and care for their environment. What started as a school-based waste minimisation programme has grown into one of New Zealand’s longest-running environmental education initiatives, reaching tens of thousands of children every year.
From the beginning, the programme has focused on hands-on learning. Specialist educators visit schools with workbooks, games and interactive activities that show children how everyday choices affect the planet. Students learn practical skills such as composting, reducing lunchbox waste, saving water and recycling correctly.
A key part of the programme has always been taking the message beyond the classroom. Children are encouraged to share what they learn with their families, creating lasting behaviour change in homes and communities. By helping young people understand the connection between natural resources, consumption and waste, Zero Waste Education empowers the next generation to become environmental leaders.
Today, Zero Waste Education is funded by councils throughout New Zealand, primarily through waste levy funding. This support allows schools to receive the programme free of charge while helping communities reduce waste and move towards a more sustainable future.
